Good review. With all due respect, I think your remarks about the filmmakers “infantilizing” Rocky are misplaced, maybe even species-ist. It can be just as easily argued that Rocky displays the childlike enthusiasm that every human displays prior to the onset of pre-adolescent social insecurities. There’s no scientific reason why an alien of advanced years and experience must be chill and somber. That’s just how humans act, except when they’re in a very high-trust environment. Eridians foster their childlike wonder. Also, the cat-and-mouse cartoon physics at first contact seemed to me a kind of wink from the director, setting up the inevitability of the inter-species encounter.
